Pedernales Falls State Park Day Trip

Jul 3, 2023

Skip town and adventure over to Pedernales Falls State Park, located less than 45 minutes outside of Marble Falls. This is the perfect location for a day trip filled with spectacular views of nature and outdoor activities. The river expanses more than 3,000 feet, drops 50 feet in elevation and is surrounded by 300-million-year-old smooth river limestone slabs. The area is home to various wildlife such as the white-tailed deer, rabbits and armadillos.

Experience swimming, tubing, canoeing or kayaking in the mostly tranquil river. It can get turbulent at times, but it is typically relaxing and exciting to float down. This is the perfect spot to cool off during the hot summer months. For your own safety, make sure you are aware of the areas where swimming is not allowed.

If you like to sit along the bank of the river you can also experience the joy of fishing and bird watching. In this area you will find catfish, bass, sunfish and more than 150 different species of birds.

The trails in the area are perfect for hiking or mountain biking. The Twin Fall Nature trail is ideal for beginner hikers and mountain bikers. For the more experienced outdoor adventure work your way up to the technical 10-mile Juniper Ridge trail. These trails feature scenic overlooks of the falls and small canyons within the Tobacco and Wolf mountains.

There is also a trail available for horseback riding. The area has water troughs and a trailer parking area. It does close occasionally for inclement weather, be sure to call ahead and find out the current status.

Extend your trip for a day or two and camp within the area to enjoy the majestic oak and juniper woodlands. Campsites are available with water and electricity or you can hike a short distance to a primitive campsite to stay with your group.

If you are looking for service opportunities, the state park is always looking for volunteers to help maintain the land. Find more information here.
