Bocce Ball at Gregg Ranch

Oct 26, 2021

Bocce Ball is a combination of the best of ski-ball, shuffleboard and bowling, a great game for people of all ages, and skill levels. Gregg Ranch has a convenient bocce ball court that encourages gathering with neighbors for fun and safe recreation.

Bocce is an international sport, and second only to soccer, it is the most played sport in the world. The exact time and place of origin are difficult to pinpoint. However, historians have dated the game back to 5000 B.C. in Egypt. From Egypt, the game spread to Greece in 300 B.C. and the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago. The game was originally played with polished stones.

The game is played with two teams of one, two, or four players using eight large balls and one small object called a pallina. There are four balls per team, made of a different color or pattern to distinguish the balls of one team from those of the other team.

A coin toss determines who begins the game. A player tosses the pallina past the center line of the court, staying within the boundaries of the court. Balls must be thrown underhanded, and the player must not step over the foul line. The team has the option of rolling, tossing or bouncing the ball down the court.

Any ball that goes outside the boundaries of the court is considered a dead ball and is removed immediately from play.

The goal is to get a ball close to the pallina, knock the opponent’s ball away from the pallina, or hit the pallina so it ends up closer to your team’s ball.

When both teams have thrown all their Bocce balls, a frame is over and points are awarded. The game resumes by teams throwing from the opposite end of the court. The team that was awarded points in the previous frame begins the next frame by tossing the pallina into play.

All measurements should be made from the center of the pallina to the edge of a Bocce ball. Games are played to 16 points with the first team reaching 16 points being the winner of a game.

Whether it’s a casual or competitive game, it’s a great way to meet fun people at Gregg Ranch!
